Omas is Flexy: Interview with Andrea Basso, Omas General Manager and Business Controller

Briefly tell us about your path from Business Controller to General Manager

I am Andrea Basso, General Manager of Omas Industries. I have been in this role since January 2022, although I have been working in Omas for 4 years now. It all started in 2019, when CEO Luigi Nalon offered me a very interesting challenge: to develop the management control of his company. Omas is a relatively young company in the world of milling, which is rapidly developing. In order to have a sustainable and coordinated growth, Omas needed a controlling department to support the different business units.

The beginning, like all the new professional adventures, was not easy. Fortunately, my work experience gained in the Big 4, consulting and management control companies allowed me to enter in a short time the most important issues in a very hot year as 2019 where Omas turnover increased from 14.5 million to 21.1 million.

Thanks to my past experience in important companies, including listed companies, to the Master’s degrees attended postgraduate and my transversality between the various business departments I was able to establish myself as General Manager. To this main activity I keep on the one of controller, formulating management budgets, accounting controls and formulation of KPIs, which must be clear to all department managers.

What is the environment like in Omas and what are your main challenges?

Since the first day I perceived a genuine and stimulating environment, thanks to the availability of my colleagues, all very competent and passionate about their work. This immediately pushed me to give the best of myself, without sparing me.The motivation and skills of people are the pillars on which Omas is based, the numbers that I analyse every day are only the consequence of the good work done by all.

The challenges that arise on a daily basis are many and of different nature: they pass from making operational but also structural decisions, as investments and market strategies. I also spend time listening to the problems and dynamics of the company and then understand the causes and propose possible improvements. The aim is always to create a stimulating environment that responds to everyone’s professional ambitions so that everyone feels part of a great team like Omas.

What are your main projects at the moment?

I am engaged in particular in the improvement of the supply chain and digitalisation of numerous processes. In 2023 the company is in continuous development and in the near future it will be essential to speed up delivery times and improve the control of the production process and the quality of the materials. At the same time, we are revolutionizing our ERP to improve all the supply chain processes and management control to be always one step ahead.

All this should lead to the optimization of the production process to make even more evident the added value that Omas can bring to its customers, differentiating us from the competition and giving high-tech, tailored machines in the shortest time possible. As proof of the above, in the coming months we will replace the fleet of laser cutting and bending machines and related software in order to fully meet the needs of our customers.

How do you see Omas' future?

This is a great year, that represents a milestone for Milling Division as numerous mills will become operative: from 900TDP, 500TDP, 350TDP worldwide, the result of years of hard work. This will once again demonstrate to our customers and future customers the reliability of our technology in line with the principles of sustainability on which the economy of the coming years will be based. Despite the strong economic slowdown caused by the Covid-19 in 2020 and the Russia-Ukraine war, we are confident and aware of our potential, a future that we see increasingly digital even in such a traditionalist market as milling.
